Abstract

This deliverable presents the first version of the Multimedia Semantic Model(MSM) in the framework of the BOEMIE project. The MSM plays the role of the background knowledge that guides the processes of Semantics Extraction from multimedia documents, Ontology Evolution, and Information Retrieval and Presentation. To account for the different types of knowledge involved and for the functionalities required, the proposed Knowledge Base (KB) consists of several ontologies formed with different Knowledge Representation (KR) formalisms. The ontologies that consist the MSM are the Domain ontologies, the Multimedia Content Ontology and the Multimedia Descriptor Ontology and are interwoven through various kinds of relations, i.e. structural, spatial, temporal, etc. The KR formalisms that are used to handle with the different types of functionalities required are DLs, DL-safe rules and Fuzzy DLs. DLs and DL-safe rules aid the Semantics Extraction process and the Information Retrieval and Presentation process. The necessity of Fuzzy DLs emerges for handling the innate imprecision of Semantics Extraction from single modalities and Ontology Matching.
