Abstract

This report presents the activities conducted w ithin Task T4.2 of the SAPIR project. It discusses the state-of-the-art of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology for indexing and searching multimedia content including images, text, and user-provided tags. The focus is on peer-centric overlay netw orks of autonomous peers w here each peer builds a local index from its ow n personal data, focused Web craw ls, or data gathered from external sources. To facilitate global search, indexes contain peer- summary information regarding features that can be used for similarity search and ranking algorithms. The main goal is to support efficient routing of queries to a small number of judiciously chosen peers that can deliver high-quality results at acceptable execution cost. The report contains preliminary results achieved in Task T4.2.
