Abstract

This deliverable provides a cohesive description of the design principles for the construction of the domain on-tologies. In addition, it provides a state-of-the-art report on knowledge representation and ontology engineering. Two domain ontologies are presented, the Athletics Event ontology and the Geographic Information ontol-ogy. The Athletics Event ontology contains concepts, relations, axioms and rules that formally represent the domain of Athletics. This ontology is instantiated by all the analysis modules (modalities) and can be enriched (during the evolution process) with new knowledge. Axioms and rules are used to extract implicit knowledge (inferred types), which can be further utilized by the se-mantics extraction process, trigger the evolution process and enable better retrieval. The design principles for con-structing the Athletics ontology have been based on the requirements of multimedia analysis, reasoning services available and evolution. The geographical ontology con-tains information, which can be used to connect the do-main knowledge with map data. In this way, the end user will have the ability to make queries that connect athletic events with geographical information (countries, cities, stadiums, etc.).
