TRANS-CARPATHIAN AREAS NEED FOREIGN AID KIEV, MARCH 7. /RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT VIKTOR DEMIDENKO/. The foreign ministry of Ukraine has addressed foreign nations and organizations asking for humanitarian aid to the Trans-Carpathian region which has heavily suffered from inundation. Ukraine's emergency situations ministry reports that two men perished and about 200 towns and settlements of the region suffered from floods. Telephone communication is cut off in many of them. In all, 92 settlements are left without heat and light. According to the press service of the Ukrainian foreign ministry, Ukraine hopes that such countries as the USA, Canada, and the European Union will provide aid. The flooded areas of the Trans-Carpathian region are lacking in medical equipment, medicines, and warm clothes. On March 9 Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma is expected to visit the area struck by the natural disaster.
