RUSSIAN BORDER-GUARDS PREVENT BORDER-CROSSERS FROM PENETRATING FROM AFGHANISTAN INTO TAJIKISTAN DUSHANBE, MARCH 7, 2001 /FROM A RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT/ -- The Russian border-guards have stemmed an attempt of a group of border-crossers to penetrate from Afghanistan into Tajikistan. As RIA Novosti was told today in the press service of the border-guards group of the Federal Frontier Service (FPS) of Russia in Tajikistan, on Tuesday night a duty of border-guards saw the movement of several unknown individuals in the insular zone of the Panj river at the section of the Panj border-guards detachment. After the locality was illuminated from a signal pistol and a preventive shot into the air was fired the group of border-crossers which consisted of about five persons escaped on the territory of Afghanistan. Today after daybreak the inspection of the locality was carried out.
