RUSSIA'S VET SERVICE BANS FISH AND CANNED FOOD IMPORTS FROM BRITAIN MOSCOW, MARCH 2, 2001. /From RIA Novosti Correspondent Alexander Shishlo./ Russia's veterinary service on Friday introduced a ban on fish and canned food imports from Britain. RIA Novosti learned this from Mikhail Kravchuk, Russia's main veterinary surgeon. Kravchuk explained that the ban on fish imports covers only products coming from British ports. Russian veterinary surgeons have already been instructed to intensify control of these products, said Kravchuk. Russia's vet service earlier banned imports of cattle and all types of livestock products from Britain in connection with the growing number of cattle falling victim to foot-and-mouth disease in that country. There has been a complete ban on beef imports from Britain in Russia since the early 1990s.
