RUSSIA AND TAJIKISTAN AGREE TO FORTIFY BORDER WITH AFGHANISTAN DUSHANBE, MARCH 2, 2001 - From RIA Novosti Correspondent. Russia and Tajikistan have agreed to fortify the border with Afghanistan. The relevant negotiations were conducted in Dushanbe by Emomali Rakhmonov, President of Tajikistan, and Konstantin Totsky, director of the Russian Federal Border Service. The Tajik leader said that the "fact that the Afghan problem remains unsettled continues to create a threat not only to regional, but also to international security." Rakhmonov said that this state of affairs demands that Russia and Tajikistan should step up their cooperation in fortifying the border with Afghanistan.
