RUSSIA'S AUDIT CHAMBER SUMS UP ITS CHECK ON SUBMARINE RECYCLING MOSCOW, March 13. /RIA Novosti correspondent Nikolai Venediktov/. Audit Chamber chairman Sergei Stepashin will one of these days report to President Vladimir Putin the results of a check on the fulfilment of a programme for recycling scrapped nuclear submarines, Vladimir Ulyanov told the committee on security and defence of the Federation Council - the upper house of the Russian parliament. Ulyanov is responsible for audit control over national defence spending. According to the figures cited by Ulyanov, out of 158 nuclear submarines removed from operational status only 39 have been actually recycled. Ulyanov also said that in the past 6 years the Audit Chamber has inspected 1,264 military facilities, revealing financial irregularities amounting to 12.3 billion roubles (one American dollar is equal to about 28.5 roubles).
