RUSSIA PROTESTS AS U.S. COURT TURNS DOWN BORODIN BAIL MOSCOW, MARCH 10, 2001. /from RIA Novosti's Cristina Rodriguez/ - Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned James Collins, US Ambassador, for Deputy Minister Georgi Mamedov to make, on his country's behalf, a categorical protest against the Brooklyn court in New York City refusing yesterday to bail off Pavel Borodin despite extraordinary details envisaged by the US legislation present in the case of the detained Russo-Belarussian union State Secretary. As Messrs. Mamedov and Collins were conferring, the Russian diplomat expressed grave concern with the Borodin affair evolving from a legal case into a political controversy, which threatens to turn Russian-US relations to the worse. Russia hopes the court will change its stance on the appeal by Pavel Borodin's lawyers, and the US Department of State will consider all related circumstances for an unbiased consideration of a final court verdict on prospects for the suspect's extradition to Switzerland.
