UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT VISITS TRANSCARPATHIA REGION KIEV, March 9, 2001 /From RIA Novosti correspondent Viktor Demidenko/ -- On Friday, Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma will be visiting the Transcarpathian region, in the west of the country. The Ukrainian leader is going to look into the local developments and give instructions as to how deal with the aftermath of recent floods. The Emergencies Minister, Vasily Durdinets, arrived at the region earlier. The floods killed 6 people. The hydrological situation is still pretty tough in 12 districts of the Transcarpathian region. Over 200 towns and villages have been flooded, and nearly a thousand of residential houses destroyed. Also destroyed are about 9 kilometres of rail and more than 3 kilometres of motor roads. About 15 thousand people had to be evacuated.
