RADIOACTIVE WASTE PROCESSING PLANT TO RISE NEAR CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER STATION BRUSSELS, March 6. /RIA Novosti's correspondent Victor Onuchko/. On Monday a 33.3 million-euro contract was inked in Kiev on building a radioactive waste processing plant near the Chernobyl nuclear power facility. This was reported at a briefing on Tuesday by an official spokesman of the European Commission. The contract, which will be bankrolled by the European Union, was undersigned by the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, represented by the Energoatom agency, and the German company Nukem. It is only part of the efforts which the European Union spends to ensure full closure and disassemblying the power station, replacing it by more reliable structures that meet the safety and environmental-protection requirements, the official spokesman explained. The future unit will be called an "industrial complex for processing solid nuclear waste".
