RUSSIA TOUGHENS CONTROL OVER IMPORTS OF ANIMAL PRODUCTS MOSCOW, March 6, 2001. /RIA Novosti correspondent/--Following the spread of an epidemic of aphthous fever in a number of countries of Western Europe the Russian State Sanitary Inspection demanded a tougher control over the importation of animal products to the country, including humanitarian food cargos. Officials of the head sanitary inspection in regions and transport inspectors have been addressed with a circular letter containing a demand to deny passengers arriving from Great Britain transportation of meat products for personal usage, including sandwiches, etc. The Sanitary Inspection also demanded to introduce a tough control over sales of meat and meat products and prohibit sales without documents which confirm the quality and safety of these products.
