MOSCOW DEMANDS WASHINGTON'S EXPLANATIONS ON THE SECRET TUNNEL MOSCOW, MARCH 5, 2001 /FROM A RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT/ -- On Monday the US charge d'affaires ad interim in Russia was invited to the Russian Foreign Ministry. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the charges d'affaires ad interim received a request to clear up the US State Department's stance on the recent media reports about the construction of a secret surveillance tunnel in the mid 1980-s under the Soviet embassy in Washington. If the information is confirmed, noted Russian diplomats, then the issue may be raised of an extremely grave breach of the generally accepted norms of international law respected worldwide with regard to foreign diplomatic representative offices.
