The SOMLib Digital Library Project
www.ifs.tuwien.ac.at/~andi/somlib
Motivation
The SOMLib Digital Library Project aims at the development of a digital library system supporting intuitive, user friendly browsing of document collections by combining the benefits of conventional library organisation with the possibilities offered by digital collections.
It is based on the self-organizing map (SOM), a popular unsupervised neural network, used to organize documents by content into bookshelves.
Metaphor graphics facilitate the intuitive representation of the resulting document archive, allowing users to get an instant overview of its content and characteristics.
New: SOMLib goes music!! We have extended the principles of the SOMLib
system
to music archives, allowing you to organize and browse collections of music. Take a look at the
resulting SOMeJB, the SOM-enhanced
Jukebox.
Overview
-
Motivation
A short comparison of the conventional library organisation and
digital library approaches.
-
Description
A short description of the SOMLib digital library project,
presented at the 4th ACM Conference on Digital Libraries,
Berkley, CA, August 1999.
-
Architecture
An overview of the architecture of the SOMLib system,
describing the various modules and methods developed, starting from
the text representation to the libViewer library visualization.
Links to various intermediate results are also presented online, a kind of
guided tour through the SOMLib libary.
-
Experiments and Demos
Description of the various experiments as well as on-line
demonstrations of the SOMLib system using different data sets.
Provides an example-based view of the library system, rather than a
module-based one and allows you to explore and thest the capabilities of the SOMLib System yourself.

SOMLib project.
-
Related Projects / Sub-Projects
A number of sub-projects are related to or form a major part of the SOMLib project. Here we provide links to the according home-pages.
-
Download
Some of the tools we use for creating a SOMLib library system are now available for you to download, and to play around with, and more are there to come - however, they come without any warranty ;)
