ALVARO GIL-ROBLES: THERE IS A POSITIVE DYNAMICS IN SETTLING THE SITUATION IN CHECHNYA MOSCOW, March 2, 2001. /RIA Novosti correspondent Galina Filippova/ -- Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Alvaro Gil-Robles has pointed out a positive dynamics in settling the situation in the Chechen Republic. Chairman of the parliamentary international committee Dmitry Rogozin told journalists about it after his meeting with Alvaro Gil-Robles. As the parliamentarian said, the President of Russia will be informed about the proposals for settling the situation in Chechnya which were made by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe. Answering a RIA Novosti question, Dmitry Rogozin refused to specify the proposals. He only said that those were serious recommendations which, in his opinion, "are useful from the point of view of the strategy and tactics of settling the situation in Chechnya." Dmitry Rogozin believes that Alvaro Gil-Robles has taken up the problems of settling the situation in Chechnya "not to show himself, as some other Europeans did when visiting Chechnya." As the parliamentarian said, Gil-Robles is friendly to Russia and believes that Europe must get rid of conflicts similar to that in Chechnya, like the settlement in Northern Ireland in Great Britain and the settlement in Spain concerning Basques." -O- (kos/kri) 02/03/01 15:29
